According to an article in the Journal of Science, researchers at Rochester University in New York found that we humans can smell over 1 trillion different odors. We can distinguish the smell of gasoline from the smell of a freshly baked apple pie. We know the difference between a smell that emanates from a floral shop as opposed to the stench that arises from a garbage dump. I could go on and on until reaching 1 trillion. Well ok, I don’t know how to count to 1 trillion but you get the picture. The world is a smelly place!
One Way to Freshen Up
My niece recently gave me a unique gift…a USB diffuser! That’s right…you just add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to a tiny, tiny bottle with a wick, snap it into a jump drive then stick that into your computer’s USB port and voila…an aromatic concoction perfuming your space every 60 seconds. Fantastic!
The Best Way to Perfume the World
It has occurred to me that we are God’s diffusers. He uses us to scatter His fragrance upon the earth. The essential oil…His Word (bible), of course.
“But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of Him.” ~ 2 Corinthians 2:14
Conduct a “Smell” Check
If there is such a thing as an aroma meter (as I’m sure there is somewhere), I’m wondering where my “essence of God” falls on that scale. Is it detectable from all of the other competing smells? Is it too overbearing? Is it sweet or bitter? The diffuser is nothing without the essential oil and I know that, apart from God and His love, I am nothing. His fragrance is captivating. Oh that I would surrender to it.
