Each Day is a Gift

How do you use your gifts each day?

Have you ever given a gift to someone and, with great anticipation, watched as they opened it only to be crushed by their obvious disappointment? You immediately sensed that the gift might end up as a dust collector or, worse, be stacked in the “re-gift” pile. Remember how that made you feel?

I’ve been wondering how often God has been pained by my lack of enthusiasm when it comes to the gift He’s given to me…His Son, Jesus. Oh, I love the Lord Jesus with all my heart but I can say with some certainty that there are days when the evidence of that is a bit weak. The reason I know this is because of some of the other gifts that God has bestowed upon me have sat idle.

God is a gift-giver. Gifts within gifts are His specialty. First and foremost is the gift of eternal life through Jesus and embedded in that remarkable gift are others. He has “given us different gifts according to the grace given us.” (Romans 12:6-8)

There is leadership, teaching, encouragement, mercy, and prophesying amongst others. Each is essential and fits as a piece in the global puzzle. God has given us an opportunity to share our special gifts with others so that He might be glorified. Sadly, I mess this up too many times. Some days I can’t get out of my own way let alone be an encouragement [or insert your gift here] to others.

But…and this is BIG…we can try again to get it right as a declaration of thanksgiving and as an expression of God’s abounding grace. Each day is a gift and I believe God wants us to open it, enjoy it, and by the power of His Holy Spirit, share it with others so that people will come to know Him.

Am I alone in this or are there unopened or underutilized gifts you’re harboring? If so, remember that today is a gift…open & share it.
