Recently, I had the good fortune to spend a few days in Key West with two very special cousins from California. We swam in the shallow waters off the beautiful Smathers Beach which was just across the way from our condo.
The weather was perfect and the water utterly delightful, however, once in the ocean we saw very little in terms of marine life: sea grass, an occasional rock, and quick-as-lightning minnows were about it. The water was too shallow…too boring!
As a child, I spent many memorable days in the Keys. I relished the true splendor of deeper dives to reef systems teeming with countless species of coral and fish. Big fish, little fish, conch, and lobster were abundant. There is so much more to see, to learn, and to experience by being in deeper waters.
Get out of the shallows
Diving in deeper seas takes more effort. Currents work against you. You can be carried away from your starting point quite easily and unnoticed until you’re ready to climb back into the boat.
Sharks and barracuda loom around every corner which can be more than a little disconcerting but you keep swimming…once you catch your breath and your heart rate slows down to a normal pace that is. As you take in the brilliant kaleidoscope of God’s matchless undersea environs you are rewarded beyond measure. There is no comparison to what awaits you once you get out of the shallows.
Shallow times in your faith walk
You know where I’m going with this analogy, right? The same can be said about our relationship with Jesus! We need to move beyond our perfunctory surface dive and delve deeper into kinship with God.
It does take effort on our part. Instead of currents, tides, sharks, and other such monsters, our distractions are often work, family, sports, and my favorite pastime… laziness!
It’s true that we benefit the most by being in a deeper relationship with God; yet He desires a close, abiding relationship with us! Let me repeat that…He desires a close, abiding relationship with us! Think about that for a moment.
The one, true, holy God of the universe wants intimate time with you and me! The depth of His love, His mercy, His grace, and His forgiveness is unfathomable. We can’t go deep enough.
Treasures of the Deep
What awaits us as we go deeper with God? I believe that as we focus more on our relationship with the Lord, we become more like Him by the power of His Holy Spirit. We take on the fruit of the Spirit; treasured gems so coveted by today’s world.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.” ~ Galatians 5:22-23
We need to hear His Word (Psalm 78:1), read His Word (Isaiah 34:16), study His Word (Acts 17:11), memorize His Word (Psalm 119:11), meditate on His Word (Joshua 1:8) so that we can spread His Word (Acts 1:8).
So how about it, are you ready to venture beyond the shallows into the immeasurable depths of Jesus Christ? Treasures await you…take the plunge!
Be a blessing & delve deeper!
